Devotional Thought 81: Watch the Throne

The LORD will extend Your powerful kingdom from Jerusalem;

    You will rule in the midst of Your enemies.

(Psalm 110:2)

There is something so cool to us modern people about the idea of kingdoms and rulers and armies, isn’t there? It’s just so old and foreign to us! Yet, for those of us who’ve given up our lives to follow Jesus, it’s what we’re destined for, and even what we have now. Being a part of Jesus’ kingdom now is NOT easy, but we have hope that one day, every enemy and every obstacle will be removed!

When a young Solomon becomes king of Israel after his father David dies, Israel is no longer at war, but looking ahead to times of peace. Moving forward, Solomon has to do something difficult: bring justice to the enemies and traitors for the good of the nation! To establish the kingdom and transition into a new era, the enemies that David mercifully tolerated have to be dealt with and removed. (1 Kings 2)

As the LORD looks at how evil His people have become, He reveals the plan He has for His world: He’s going to bring the fire of His wrath and judgment on the entire Earth, and all its nations. But not to destroy it, to purify it! The LORD, the King of Israel, is going to deliver His people from their enemies, and remove sin and evil from His good world so they can seek and worship Him in peace! (Zephaniah 3)

Jesus the Messiah rules in the midst of His enemies. He is present and reigns in the lives of those who follow Him, so the kingdom is already here, just not fully. (Matthew 4:17) So for now, following Jesus means suffering persecution, attacks from Satan and his forces, and the hardships of living in a fallen world (Coronavirus included); in order to truly seek His kingdom first, we have to struggle and fight against opposition all the time! But, when the King finally comes to establish His kingdom, He will remove every threat and enemy from the world, so He can dwell with us in peace and joy!

  • Whatever you may be going through now, whether it’s an external attack or your own temptation to sin, know that you’re not alone! In Jesus, you are a citizen of the coming kingdom of God, which means you’re at war with the enemy and sin. But soon, indeed very soon, the King is coming to set up His kingdom over the world in full, and on that day He will finish what He began on the cross and in the grave! He will cast out the enemy, judge the unrighteous, and do a complete makeover of Creation, so we can worship and rule with our King forever!

The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will remove from his Kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil. And the angels will throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Then the righteous will shine like the sun in their Father’s Kingdom. Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand!

(Matthew 13:41-43)
