Devotional Thought 54: Advocate (His Grace, Our Security)

You will keep him in perfect Peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You. Trust in the Lord forever, for YAH, the Lord, is the Rock of Ages. (Isaiah 26:3-4)

Jesus teaches His disciples that He hasn’t come to destroy or abolish the Old Testament, but to reveal and fulfill it! He then goes on to list six different OT laws and either deepen their shallow understandings or correct false ones. For instance, Jesus takes the biblical command to not murder and deepens it, showing that God didn’t want murder on the hearts of His people as much as their hands! He isn’t disputing or correcting the Old Testament, He’s combating the false or shallow interpretations that arose from evil rabbinic traditions. The Messiah has come to reveal and fulfill Moses and the Prophets in full!

One of the many titles for God in Scripture, particularly the Old Testament, is the Rock! The imagery that inspired isn’t necessarily the kind of rock you’d find at the playground, but a mountain or a jutting cliff! Calling God a Rock was a way of saying that He is eternal, perfect, rock-solid, trustworthy, and the Source of true security. Many times in the Psalms, God is referred to as “the Rock of my salvation.” (Psalm 89:16) In the New Testament, Jesus is called the Chief Cornerstone, which is another way of saying He is the Foundation of the Church! (Ephesians 2:19-20)

So what does this mean for us? When Paul is instructing Timothy on how to shepherd the church in Ephesus well, he tells him that, despite all the falsehood and evil and temptation brought on to him there, rock-solid truth of God still stood: God knows and preserves those who truly belong to Him, and those who truly belong to Him will walk in faith to the end. Therefore, while Timothy had a lot of work to do, he shouldn’t worry since he had the Lord’s solid truth to stand on. We have a ton to deal with on this side of Heaven as disciples of Christ, but we can experience total security (peace, comfort, confidence) when we fix our faith on the Rock, our Father, Savior, and Companion!

  • Our God, revealed in Jesus Christ, is our Eternal Rock! He is utterly trustworthy, faithful, unchanging and perfect forever. Therefore, all who place heir faith in Him experience perfect Peace, comfort and assurance despite the struggles they face in this fallen world! God’s Word is our rock-solid Source of truth, Jesus Christ is our rock-solid Savior and Foundation, and God is our rock-solid Father for all eternity; no chance of changin’ that!

Nevertheless, the solid foundation of God stands… (2 Tim. 2:19)
