Devotional Thought 48: Influencer (What?)

Clearly you are an epistle of Christ, ministered by us, written not with ink but by the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of flesh, that is, of the heart. (2 Cor. 3:3)

What does it mean to be influential in the Kingdom of God? These next few devotional thoughts will focus on the who, when, what, where, why and how of being an influencer in Christ! (This one is my personal favorite!)

As two disciples leave Jerusalem and head towards Emmaus, the risen Jesus Himself comes and walks with them in a mystery form they can’t recognize. He asks them what they’re sad about (as if He doesn’t know), to which they explain their disappointment in the death of the dude they hoped would be the Messiah. Mystery Jesus tells them that this was all predicted in the Old Testament, and showed them all the things concerning Himself in Scripture. Later, when He stays with them for dinner, His true identity is revealed to them as He blesses and breaks bread for them! The two disciples frantically run back to Jerusalem to tell the apostles what happened.

Jesus Christ is the main Character of the entire Bible! The Old Testament, from Moses to the Prophets, points to Him; it is the shadow, Christ is the Reality! He is predicted and prophesied about countless times in Scripture, hundreds and even thousands of years before His arrival! He is the LORD, YHWH, the God of Creation, become human. He was born from David’s line as the true Heir to the throne of Israel, and He was proven to be God’s unique Son when He rose from the dead after His crucifixion. (Romans 1:1-4)(Hebrews 1:1-4)(2 Tim. 3:15)

Can the same be said about our lives? The same way God’s Word points to Jesus from beginning to end, am I riddled with evidence that Christ is my Creator, Source, and ultimate Purpose in life? Just as the disciples were blinded to who Jesus was until He broke bread with them, the world is blinded to the light of the Gospel of His glory until we reveal Him to them by the way our lives point totally to Him, like Scripture does!

When Paul chastises the crazy Corinthian church (again), he mentions how he doesn’t need a “letter of recommendation” to prove his authority and identity as an apostle of Christ, they are the proof! Their transformation in Christ is the proof of the Holy Spirit’s work through them! However, he uses an interesting term to describe them: he calls them “living epistles”, or letters, of Christ. That’s a perfect way to describe what we are as influencers, living Scripture! We become living extensions of God’s Word, our lives completely testifying to the Person and Work of Jesus the Messiah, as we grow in the Holy Spirit!

  • We might be the only Bible some people ever read. We need to be a People so steeped in God’s Word that we become living, breathing extensions of Scripture! The same way God’s Word points to Jesus from beginning to end, so should our lives as witnesses and ambassadors. Being an influencer doesn’t consist of social media fame, manipulation, a large platform, etc., it primarily involves becoming epistles of Jesus Christ, living extensions of Scripture to the world!

You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life, but the Scriptures testify of Me! (John 5:39)
